Philanthropy
JESUS SAID, “FROM EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN GIVEN MUCH, MUCH WILL BE DEMANDED; AND FROM THE ONE WHO HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH MUCH, MUCH MORE WILL BE ASKED.” (LUKE 12:48)
It is this principle that has guided Shelly’s heart for philanthropy and service to her community for practically her entire life. Calling herself a bit of a “church gypsy,” she has always had an openness and desire to go where God leads and to be of service where she is needed most. This has manifested in Shelly’s belief in tithing to God’s people – giving of the blessings she has received to the people most in need.
Giving Back,
This philosophy has truly impacted every area of Shelly’s life and not only informs the work she does everyday as a designer and contractor, but has also inspired her to create several outreach programs within the community.
Backpack Program
One such program is The Backpack Program, which provides backpacks full of personal items, clothing and snacks to anyone visiting the Thermal Shelter of Front Royal – a local shelter for 18+ men and women. Shelly enlists the help of local businesses and volunteers to fill the backpacks with sweatsuits, hats, gloves, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant and food and delivers them to the shelter.
Food Pantry
In addition to The Backpack Program, Shelly also founded the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry of Front Royal. The pantry provides perishable and non-perishable foods, including fresh produce, dairy, meat and traditional staples such as canned vegetables, rice and beans. With access to a program developed by Shelly, which allows the pantry to identify individuals in need, they now feed over 200 families every week.
